Long-running names disappear
Among the premises to have closed since 2020 are The Bridge Inn and the West Midlands Tavern, both in Lowesmoor, plus city-centre venues such as the Cricketers (historically the Cricketers Arms) in Angel Street and, most recently, the Slug & Lettuce, which is due to shut next month.
The Cricketers shut its doors permanently in July 2020 following the Covid-19 lockdown. The West Midlands Tavern, a pub which had operated since 1860, closed in 2024.
Buildings repurposed and sold
The Bridge, a freehold pub in Lowesmoor Terrace, was offered at auction on 10 December last year with a guide price of £200,000, the auctioneers saying it had potential for a range of alternative uses subject to planning consent.
The former West Midlands Tavern was put on the market with an asking price of £300,000 and has been acquired by Aziz Capital Limited. The new owner intends to convert the ground floor into a takeaway (the precise type of food has not been disclosed) and use part of the building as an office for a van hire business.

The West Midlands Tavern building has been the subject of council enforcement after a bay window was removed without planning permission. Worcester City Council took action and the work is now being addressed by the new owner with the help of city architect Nick Carroll.
