Police appeal after serious knife attack near Clapham Park
A 37-year-old man remains in a critical condition following a stabbing on Weir Road, Balham, shortly before 7.40pm on Saturday 18 July. The incident unfolded in daylight on a residential stretch close to Clapham Park. Officers from the Metropolitan Police provided first aid at the scene before the victim was taken to hospital by paramedics.
Detectives are searching for a male suspect who fled after the assault. Members of the public who witnessed the attack pursued the man — despite him still being armed — in an attempt to drive him from the victim, according to police. An investigation led by senior officers is under way, with specialist teams reviewing local enquiries and any available footage.
“This was a shocking and brutal attack, carried out in broad daylight on a residential street. Our officers are working quickly to identify and arrest the attacker and it is imperative that anyone with information should come forward immediately... We would also like to pay tribute to the members of the public who bravely chased the suspect away from the scene while he was still armed.”
Road closures were enforced last night while emergency services secured the area. Weir Road was shut in both directions between Cavendish Road and Molly Huggins Close. The cordon has since been lifted and traffic has returned to normal.
Extra patrols and community reassurance
Senior officers have acknowledged the shock caused locally. Residents should expect a visible police presence over the coming days as reassurance patrols are increased. The force is urging anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident — including pedestrians, drivers and cyclists — to share any mobile, CCTV or dashcam footage that could assist the inquiry.
While the attack took place outside Croydon, many residents commute or travel through neighbouring South London boroughs. Police advice remains the same: report anything suspicious immediately and avoid sharing unverified speculation on social media while the investigation progresses.
What witnesses and residents can do
- Review any private CCTV or doorbell recordings from the Weir Road area on Saturday evening, especially between 7pm and 8pm.
- Check vehicle dashcams if you travelled along Cavendish Road, Weir Road or nearby side streets around the time of the incident.
- Report sightings of a man leaving the area around that time, particularly if he appeared injured, discarded clothing, or sought assistance.
