Community volunteer hailed for festive fundraising and inclusive events
One of Barnsley’s better-known local volunteers has been recognised for turning a simple idea into a community lifeline at Christmas. Jordan Gray, 32, a security guard who also boxes, has spent almost a decade supporting the Barnsley Hospital Charity through events designed to ensure families struggling with the cost of living can still enjoy festive activities.
Gray has been involved with the charity’s Shine Bright event for nine years and, for the last three, has taken on the role of the town’s tallest Father Christmas. At 6ft 9in, he has used the role to develop a larger project: a community Winter Wonderland grotto offered on a pay-what-you-can basis.
The initiative combines entertainment, stalls, food and targeted sessions to better include adults and children with complex educational needs. Last year’s event raised around £3,000, which was distributed between the Barnsley Hospital Charity and families known to Gray who were facing financial hardship.
“Life is too short so doing something like this and putting a smile on kids’ faces it makes everything feel worth it,”
Gray told the local paper he conceived the grotto after taking his own children to a commercial Lapland experience and seeing how expensive such trips can be. He decided to create a local alternative that was affordable to all.
Jane Mills, charity development manager at the Barnsley Hospital Charity, praised Gray’s commitment and the joy he brings to the community.
“Jordan doesn’t do any of this for recognition. He does it because he genuinely cares about people and believes everyone deserves a bit of happiness and a little bit of magic.”
Organisers say the event deliberately included sessions tailored for people with additional needs so the grotto could be welcoming to everyone. Gray has indicated plans to expand the project in future years, including improving the venue to accommodate more people and activities.
For his creativity and dedication, Gray has been named as a nominee for the Proud of Barnsley awards. The nomination highlights grassroots efforts to tackle the social impact of rising living costs within the town by keeping festive experiences affordable and accessible.
