Former Hartlepool United forward Charlie Wyke has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33. The striker, who featured for a number of clubs across the English leagues, made two separate loan appearances at Victoria Park early in his career and finishes his playing days having accumulated spells with several clubs in the North and the Midlands.
Early spells in Hartlepool and rise through the leagues
Wyke first came to Hartlepool on loan from Middlesbrough in August 2012 while still a youth-team player at the Teesside club. During that initial loan he scored twice in 25 League One matches. A second temporary move to Victoria Park in the 2014/15 season proved more productive: he found the net four times in 13 League Two appearances.

After leaving Middlesbrough, Wyke spent time with clubs including Carlisle United and Bradford City before returning to the North East with Sunderland in August 2018. Serious medical episode and return to play
Wyke's career was punctuated by a life‑threatening episode while at Wigan in November 2021, when he collapsed during a training session. He was treated by medical staff at the club before being taken to hospital and subsequently suffered a cardiac arrest. Wyke was fitted with a defibrillator and was able to return to competitive action in the early part of the following season.
