Families in Dewsbury are being invited to enjoy a free day of seaside-style entertainment when Dewsbury on Sea returns to the town centre next Saturday (25 July). The Princess of Wales Precinct will be given a beach makeover between 11:00 and 16:00, offering a programme of activities designed for children and adults alike.

What to expect

The event, organised by The Arcade Group in partnership with Kirklees College, recreates a traditional British seaside atmosphere in the heart of Dewsbury ahead of The Arcade’s planned reopening in September. Attractions scheduled for the day include a large urban sandpit with deckchairs, craft and face-painting workshops, glitter tattoos, balloon modelling and art installations. There will also be ice cream and cream teas alongside fairground rides and the chance to buy classic Dewsbury rock.

“We are absolutely thrilled to bring Dewsbury on Sea back to the town centre after such a fantastic response last year,” said Jenny Holden-Stokes, Arcade Manager.

Organisers say the event is free to attend and aims to encourage local people to enjoy public spaces while celebrating the partnership between a local business and an educational institution.

Family highlights

  • Children’s crafts and workshops
  • Face painting, glitter tattoos and balloon modelling
  • Funfair rides and seaside snacks
  • Meet-and-greet appearances from character guests

The community-focused day is being promoted as a way to kickstart the school holidays and to generate footfall ahead of The Arcade’s grand reopening, currently scheduled for 5 September. The collaboration with Kirklees College is presented as part of wider efforts to support community-led regeneration and make the town centre more welcoming.

Visitors should arrive prepared for typical summer weather and the event’s outdoor setting. While admission and most activities are free, some attractions such as fairground rides and food vendors may have charges.

Local residents and families looking for a low-cost day out will find a programme aimed at younger children and families, with activities designed to be accessible and community-centred. The event also provides an opportunity for residents to see parts of the town centre brought to life ahead of wider changes planned for the area later in the year.

For anyone planning to attend, organisers advise checking social media or The Arcade Group’s communications on the day for any updates related to weather or scheduling.
