Several homes in north Belfast have been evacuated and cordons remain in place after a security alert on Rosapenna Parade prompted a police operation overnight and into Friday morning.

Specialist officers attend scene as residents moved out

Police said specialist officers attended the scene following the search of a property during the early hours. Residents on Rosapenna Parade were asked to leave their homes and the Ardoyne Community Centre was opened as a facility for those displaced.

Authorities asked the public to avoid Rosapenna Street and the Cliftonville Road area while the operation continues. A police statement warned of "significant traffic disruption" and advised motorists to seek alternative routes.

Local disruption and residents' experience

One resident told BBC News NI she was woken by police at about 02:00 BST and directed to leave immediately. She described awakening her children and taking the family pet with her.

"I woke my kids up, and got the dog and left."

The scale and duration of the operation have not been disclosed. Police remain at the scene and cordons restrict movement in the immediate area while enquiries continue.

Practical information for residents and road users

  • Avoid Rosapenna Street and Cliftonville Road until police reopen the area.
  • Use alternative routes to prevent adding to congestion.
  • Local residents requiring assistance may be directed to the Ardoyne Community Centre.
