Police and partner agencies in Lancashire have intensified activity to prevent shop theft and related offences with a series of high-profile action days in Morecambe and other parts of the county. The events combined public engagement, crime-prevention advice and referrals to support services aimed at addressing causes of offending.
Operation Vulture and Safer Lancashire Business Partnership
Officers from Neighbourhood Policing Teams used the engagement days to raise awareness of Operation Vulture, Lancashire Police’s force-wide response to retail crime. The initiative included distributing a newly produced leaflet setting out support available to people whose personal problems can lead to shoplifting or anti-social behaviour, with the objective of intervening early and avoiding criminalisation where possible.
The activity follows the launch of the Safer Lancashire Business Partnership, which brings together commercial operators and statutory and voluntary partners to share best practice and develop solutions for crime affecting the retail sector. According to the force, the partnership is intended to strengthen collaboration between businesses, police and other agencies.

During the action days officers engaged directly with retailers and members of the public in supermarkets and other venues. The events were used to:

Lancashire Police said its Anti-Social Behaviour Prevention and Problem-Solving Team maintains year-round contact with businesses to identify vulnerabilities, advise on security measures and tackle concerns including shop theft, anti-social behaviour and violence against retail workers.
