A Moray man has been fined, ordered to pay compensation and banned from the road after a crash in which another motorist suffered serious injury.

Court heard tyre defect and ‘momentary lapse’ led to collision

The incident happened on 18 December 2024 on the B817, Shore Road, in Invergordon. At Inverness Sheriff Court, 46‑year‑old Liam Shand, of Merrayton Court, Lossiemouth, admitted driving without due care or attention.

Prosecutors told the court the front nearside tyre of Shand’s vehicle was below the legal tread limit and showed exposed ply or cord. The vehicle allegedly encroached onto the opposing carriageway, resulting in a head‑on collision that caused severe injury to the other motorist.

“He expresses remorse, regret and concern for the other driver,” said Mr Mann. “The condition of the vehicle played a part, and it was nothing more than a momentary lapse in judgement.”

Penalty and orders

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank imposed a fine of £840, ordered Shand to pay £3,500 in compensation to the victim and disqualified him from driving for 12 months.
