Police in Belfast have launched a murder investigation after a man assaulted at a home in the city's north died in hospital.
Incident and aftermath
Officers were called to a residential property in the Duncairn Parade area shortly before 18:00 on Monday, 20 July following reports of an assault. The injured man, identified by police as 44-year-old Paul Mackin Junior, was taken to hospital for treatment. He died in hospital on the evening of Wednesday, 22 July.
Arrests and police action
Three men, aged 40, 41 and 32, were arrested soon after the incident on suspicion of attempted murder. Police subsequently upgraded the inquiry after Mr Mackin's death: the 41-year-old who remained in custody has been arrested on suspicion of murder, while the 32-year-old has been released unconditionally. Investigations are continuing.
“Our thoughts are with Paul’s family at this incredibly difficult time,” said Detective Chief Inspector Jenni Rea. “Police would ask that the public avoid speculation on the circumstances around this matter, which is upsetting for the family and friends of Mr Mackin, and could have a detrimental impact on criminal justice proceedings.”
Appeal for information and local context
The PSNI has appealed to anyone with information to come forward, asking people to contact detectives on 101 and quote reference 1454 20/07/26. The force emphasised the importance of avoiding online speculation that could hinder the investigation or cause additional distress to the family and community.
The Duncairn Parade area is a residential part of north Belfast. Such a case will be closely followed in local neighbourhoods, where concerns about community safety and the criminal justice process often prompt calls for thorough police engagement and transparent updates.
