A new independent shop has opened its doors on one of York’s busiest retail streets, adding to the city centre’s growing selection of small, specialist stores. Wonder welcomed its first customers today at 24 Fossgate, bringing a lifestyle, homeware and gift offer to a unit previously occupied by a vegan café.
From café to curated homewares
Owner Ruth Phillips took on the lease around six weeks ago and has since remodelled the interior with a bright, minimalist design aimed at creating a cheerful shopping environment. The outlet replaces Remedy, which occupied the premises until earlier this year; before that the address was once home to The Barbican Bookshop.
“I just wanted to create a space where people could buy joyful things for their homes,”
Ms Phillips said she noticed a lack of lifestyle brands at this end of Fossgate and wanted to provide a fresh option for local shoppers and visitors. Several of the items reflect an emphasis on aesthetic and environmental considerations, with stock including organic facial products and accessories made from recycled materials.
Local roots and linked businesses
Wonder is connected to another local enterprise: Ms Phillips co-owns The Good Food Shop on Bishopthorpe Road with her husband Dan. The couple have run that business for more than five years and some products in Wonder will be shared or sourced through that relationship.
The new shop is painted a vivid red to stand out on the street and has stated provisional opening hours as it settles into trade. Those hours are currently scheduled as follows:
| Day | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Wednesday–Sunday | 10:30am–4:30pm |
What this means for Fossgate
Fossgate has seen a shift in recent years as independents and smaller retailers make up much of the street’s offer. The arrival of Wonder continues that trend, contributing to the diversity of shops at the southern end of the city centre and providing another reason for residents to visit on weekdays as well as weekends.
- Wonder sells lifestyle, homeware and gift items chosen for design and environmental credentials.
- Some stock will be linked to The Good Food Shop in Bishopthorpe Road.
- Trading days are currently Wednesday to Sunday, 10:30am–4:30pm.
The opening is likely to be of interest to York shoppers seeking locally run businesses with an emphasis on ethically sourced and aesthetically driven products. As with many new independent ventures, the shop’s hours and range may evolve as it responds to customer demand.
