Essex Police have maintained a large-group dispersal order across parts of Southend-on-Sea until 6.39pm on Friday 31 July, authorities confirmed, as officers seek to deter anti-social behaviour during what is expected to be a busy day on the seafront.
Where the order applies
The designated dispersal zone covers several central locations widely used by visitors and residents. Within the area police have powers to direct people or groups to leave if they are causing, or are likely to cause, anti-social behaviour under Section 35 of the Anti‑Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.

"The order means we can quickly deal with anyone who’s not behaving. Southend is a family resort, and large groups can be loud and disruptive. We won’t allow a tiny minority to spoil the atmosphere for everyone else who wants to enjoy the city."
Inspector Christopher Simpson made the comment when the order was first announced. The force has emphasised that the dispersal measure is intended to target those creating problems, and is not intended to restrict the movements of members of the public who are lawfully using the area.
