Three men have been handed custodial sentences after a violent altercation on Southend High Street that left two men with serious injuries.

The confrontation occurred on 8 February last year at about 5.30pm in the town centre, when members of the public reported a violent disturbance. Police officers attending the scene discovered two men suffering serious injuries. All three suspects were arrested on 12 March and subsequently charged. At Basildon Crown Court on 19 June two of the defendants admitted offences of grievous bodily harm with intent, while the third pleaded guilty to affray. Sentencing took place on 24 July.

Collectively, the three men received custodial terms totalling almost six and a half years, though individual sentences were recorded at the crown court.

Detective Constable Ryan Gibbs of Southend CID described the behaviour as unacceptable and emphasised that officers would not tolerate such incidents in public places.
"This incident happened in a public place at a time when a lot of people would have been around. This type of incident is completely unacceptable and we will not tolerate it. I am pleased our investigation has held these three men accountable and they have faced justice."
