As the Young Farmers year draws to a close, Suffolk’s county federation is reflecting on a season of renewed competition, community events and charitable activity that have kept rural young people engaged across the county.
Return to national contests and county unity
The year began in September with Suffolk members representing the county at national competitions held at the Malvern Autumn Show, marking a return to the national stage in disciplines including floral art and cookery after a period away.
Locally, the federation organised a range of events to bring members together. A country shopping night at Clarkes of Walsham kick‑started the season; October saw the county annual general meeting and the county sports day, an occasion that also welcomed Bury St Edmunds Young Farmers back into county competitions.
Community fundraising and social events
Charitable giving featured prominently. In December members organised a charity Christmas tractor run that drew participants from across Suffolk and raised money for Cancer Support Suffolk. The federation says such events are a clear demonstration of how Young Farmers contribute to local communities.
Social and indoor competitions have also been a focus: the year included a county bowling competition and the Suffolk Young Farmers Ball early in the new year, while November’s bonfire night — delayed by poor weather — still proved a highlight for members.
Competitive progress and public speaking
On the competitive front, Suffolk celebrated individual success at national level, with two members finishing in the top five at the National Achiever Awards. The county also held its annual public speaking competition, from which successful entrants progressed to the eastern area rounds.
