The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has upgraded the surgery services at West Cornwall Hospital to Good across all assessed areas following an inspection in March 2026. The finding represents a notable improvement on the service’s previous Requires Improvement rating.
What inspectors found
The CQC awarded Good ratings in each of the five domains it evaluates: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well‑led. Inspectors highlighted a number of strengths in the service’s provision, including systems and processes that support safe and compassionate care.
- Safety and learning culture: the report identified a positive culture of safety and learning among staff.
- Infection prevention: strong standards were noted for infection prevention and control.
- Medicines management: effective arrangements for handling medicines were recorded.
- Governance: good governance arrangements were said to underpin the delivery of high‑quality care.
"We know how important compassionate, person-centred care is to the people who use our services and their families. It is particularly pleasing to see patients describe our colleagues as kind, professional and attentive, and to hear they felt involved in decisions about their care."
The quote came from Bernadette George, the trust’s acting chief nursing officer, who welcomed the recognition of staff dedication across the hospital.
Trust response
Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust emphasised that the CQC findings reflect improvements made within the surgery service. Acting chief executive Kim O’Keeffe said the trust was "delighted" by the CQC’s recognition, while acknowledging there remain areas for ongoing improvement.
| Inspection month | Service | CQC outcome |
|---|---|---|
| March 2026 | Surgery services, West Cornwall Hospital | Good (all domains) |
Patients who spoke to inspectors reported they felt informed and involved in decisions about their care and described staff as professional and attentive. The CQC report therefore not only judged the technical and procedural side of services but also reflected patient experience.
What this means for local patients
For people who use the hospital, the CQC’s Good rating should offer reassurance about the safety and quality of surgical care provided. The trust has stated it will continue to act on the report’s feedback and pursue further improvements.
