Patients registered with GP practices in substantial parts of Swansea can now access a wider range of free wellbeing courses and groups delivered by a local charity based in Uplands.
Community-based support on Walter Road
Swansea Wellbeing Centre, a not-for-profit organisation on Walter Road in the Uplands, runs a mixture of classes, projects and six-week courses aimed at improving mental and physical wellbeing. The centre receives funding from the two local NHS cluster collaboratives — Bay Health and City Health — so that staff at participating GP practices can refer patients who may benefit.
Who is covered and what is available
Bay Health covers communities including Sketty, Uplands, Killay, Mumbles, Gower and the university campus. City Health covers areas including Mayhill, Sandfields and the city centre. All courses are provided at no cost to patients registered with GP practices within the two clusters.
- Yoga classes (including sessions for students)
- Breathwork for anxiety
- Women-only support groups
- Life After Trauma six-week course
- Dial Down Your Pain chronic pain management group
- Strong Mind, Strong Body resilience and exercise course
Centre director Emma Evans emphasised the avenues through which people can engage with the service. GP practices can make referrals, or they may simply provide patients with information to self-refer or drop in.
“GP practices can make referrals to us, or they can give their patients information about what we offer. We welcome people dropping in,”
Courses, length and cluster availability
The centre offers several structured six-week programmes alongside ongoing classes. According to the information provided, the six-week groups include a women-only course called Finding Your Innate Resilience, aimed at those affected by anxiety, stress and depression, and Life After Trauma, which focuses on coping strategies that combine acceptance with skills to stabilise trauma symptoms. A specific chronic pain course, Dial Down Your Pain, is also available.
| Course | Duration | Available to |
|---|---|---|
| Finding Your Innate Resilience | Six weeks | Patients in both clusters (women-only) |
| Life After Trauma | Six weeks | Patients in both clusters |
| Dial Down Your Pain | Ongoing group | Patients in both clusters |
| Strong Mind, Strong Body | Course format | Patients in both clusters |
Staff at GP surgeries are being asked to consider referring patients who may struggle with mobility, chronic pain, anxiety, depression or other mental health concerns. The centre also runs sessions specifically designed to support students.
For residents, the offer represents a local, non-clinical resource intended to complement primary care and statutory mental health services. Patients should contact their GP practice or Swansea Wellbeing Centre directly for details on how to refer or to check eligibility based on their registered cluster.
As these programmes are supported through local cluster funding, availability is tied to the Bay Health and City Health catchment areas; patients outside these clusters should enquire with their GP about comparable local options.
