A Gateshead man has been given a custodial sentence after a racially aggravated assault earlier this month.
Incident and arrest
On the early hours of 2 July, officers were called to Sunderland Road after a man in his 30s reported being threatened following repeated ringing of his doorbell. The victim asked the caller why he had pressed the bell several times. According to court papers and doorbell footage, the exchange escalated when the man, later identified as 31‑year‑old Garry Miller of Kipling Walk, Gateshead, directed racial abuse at the victim and then struck him to the face.
Charges and court outcome
Miller was arrested on the day of the incident and subsequently charged with racially aggravated public order and threats to commit criminal damage. He pleaded guilty at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on 3 July and was remanded into custody. Last week he was sentenced to 30 weeks in prison.
"This was a completely unacceptable assault, made all the more serious by the racist abuse directed at the victim. There is no place for racism and violence in our communities. We will continue to take robust action against those who commit these offences."
