On Sunday 30 August, LNER will operate two special services between Newcastle and Bedford as part of contingency plans while the East Coast Main Line (ECML) is closed for further work on its digital signalling programme.

The temporary move will see LNER trains divert off the ECML onto the Midland Main Line (MML) to reach Bedford, where passengers can connect with Thameslink services into London. The arrangements are a direct consequence of ongoing work on the East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP), which is installing European Train Control System (ETCS) equipment on sections of the ECML.
Network Rail and LNER say the trial is intended to maintain on-rail journeys for customers during the closure and to test whether longer-term use of the MML for diversions is feasible.
