Work to reconstruct a key route into Burton is progressing and will move into its most disruptive phase next week as engineers prepare the carriageway for resurfacing.
Project moves into surface removal and strengthening
The county council’s £2.3 million scheme on the A5121 Derby Road, covering the section from Derby Turn island to the Pirelli roundabout, has now passed the halfway point. In recent weeks contractors have focused on drainage repairs, replacing damaged kerbs and renewing sections of footway.
From Monday 3 August crews will begin removing the existing road surface and strengthening parts of the base layer. To allow this work to take place safely, a lane closure will be in place on the side of the carriageway adjoining residential properties. Traffic will flow one way while the operation is underway.
Full closure planned for a week from 9 August
Once the strengthening phase is finished, the one-way arrangement will be lifted and a full road closure will be introduced between the Pirelli Island and property number 91 for approximately one week, starting on Sunday 9 August. That closure is necessary to enable the overnight resurfacing that follows.
"Derby Road continues to make good progress, which is fantastic to see. Our crews are working hard to complete the work as efficiently as possible, whilst minimising disruption to communities," said Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways.
The council says the scheme will result in a fully resurfaced entry route into Burton, linking the A38 Clay Mills interchange to the Derby Turns roundabout, and represents a significant investment in the town's highway network.
Access, parking and local businesses
During the closure there will be no on-street parking available on the affected stretch for safety reasons. Vehicle access to some driveways may be restricted because of large open excavations and residents have been advised to make alternative parking arrangements.
Access to The Maltings Industrial Estate and Coytes Carpets will be maintained via a signed diversion along Hawkins Lane to Derby Road while the road is closed between the Pirelli island and property 91.

Residents and drivers heading into Burton are advised to plan journeys in advance, observe all signage and follow the signed diversion routes while the work is ongoing. The council says the improvements should make journeys into the town noticeably better once the scheme is finished.
Further updates are expected from the county council as phases complete and the resurfacing timetable is confirmed.
