A Belfast man has been remanded in custody after appearing at Belfast Magistrates’ Court charged in connection with the death of a north Belfast man and a number of other alleged offences.
Court hearing and charges
Forty-one-year-old Thomas McCauley, of Queen’s Parade, confirmed his identity in the dock and acknowledged that he understood the allegations against him. He faces a charge of murder relating to the death of 44-year-old Paul Mackin Junior, alongside separate accusations of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent on a female complainant and the false imprisonment of a different female. All three alleged offences are said to have occurred on 20 July.
At the hearing a detective sergeant gave evidence indicating she believed she could connect McCauley to each of the charges. Defence counsel Gordon Laird told the court there would be no application for bail. Deputy District Judge Philip Mateer remanded McCauley in custody and adjourned the case to 21 August.
Police account and appeal to the public
Police said they were called to an assault in the Duncairn Parade area shortly before 6pm. Emergency services attended and a man was taken to hospital for treatment. He later died in hospital on 22 July.
“Our thoughts are with Paul’s family at this incredibly difficult time,”
Detective Chief Inspector Jenni Rea urged the public to avoid speculation while inquiries continue, warning that unfounded commentary could hinder criminal justice proceedings and cause further distress to those affected.
