The council has apologised for the disruption and given precise dates for residents to present missed blue or black bins for collection, stressing lids must be closed.

Stockport council has issued a formal update after a number of household refuse and recycling collections were missed earlier this week, advising affected residents when crews will return and underlining the conditions for crews to collect bins.

What the council says

In a statement published on the council website, officers said they had recorded which properties were affected between 21 and 24 July. Those residents have been asked to present any missed blue or black bins by 6am on Saturday 1 August so crews can collect them. If those bins are not taken on Saturday, the council has said it will return on Sunday 2 August.

For households whose blue or black bins were not collected on Monday 27, Tuesday 28 or Wednesday 29 July, the council is asking that bins be presented from 6am on Saturday 8 August. If the collections are not completed on that Saturday, crews will return on Sunday 9 August, provided the bin lids are fully closed.

Conditions for collection

The council stressed this caveat repeatedly: crews will only collect bins that are closed. The guidance makes two clear points about what will and will not be taken:

  • If the bin lid is closed, the bin will be collected.
  • If the lid is missing but the waste level is level with the lip of the bin, it will also be collected.

The council acknowledged the inconvenience caused and apologised, saying it recognised how important reliable collections are for residents.

How this affects local households

Residents who believe their bins were missed during the dates given should present them on the specified Saturdays from 6am. The council has promised a follow-up visit on the Sundays listed if the initial catch-up rounds do not clear all outstanding collections.

Missed collection dates When to present bins Back-up return date
21–24 July From 6am, Saturday 1 August Sunday 2 August
27–29 July From 6am, Saturday 8 August Sunday 9 August

The council asked residents to ensure lids are fully closed when presenting bins; crews will not take containers with lids open. It also reiterated that all other scheduled collections will continue as normal.

Stockport households affected by earlier service changes should keep an eye on council communications and the Review Extra subscription for further updates about council services.

This follows a period of concern among residents when recent operational reminders to crews about collection policy and safety were not communicated in advance. The council said it had listened to those concerns and was working to put the service right.
