That assessment, offered publicly by Elgar Lewis, a former chair of planning and vice-chair of the now-defunct Rhymni Valley District Council, underlines the multi-layered nature of the risk. Accounts also refer to erratic boulders left by ice sheets, weathered rockfalls and a long history of subsurface disturbance associated with past mining. The mountain itself — known locally as the Brithdir — had been observed as ‘on the move’ well before demolition was mooted.
