Warwickshire opened their Metro Bank One-Day Cup account in emphatic style as Ed Barnard produced a commanding century to propel the Bears to a 45-run win over Surrey at Edgbaston.
Barnard dominates on return from the Hundred
Released for this fixture after involvement with Sunrisers Leeds, Barnard top-scored with a superb 140 from 130 balls, anchoring a total of 341 for four. His innings included quickfire boundaries and steady accumulation that put Warwickshire firmly in control on a good batting surface.
Support came from Vaansh Jani, who finished 66 not out, and Zen Malik with 58, both contributing briskly late in the innings to ensure a challenging target for the visitors.
Surrey chase but fall short
Surrey fought in reply but were eventually dismissed for 296, bowled out as they attempted to overhaul the tall total. Dom Sibley made 74 (80) against his former county and Josh Blake contributed a fluent 71 (57), but the required acceleration in the closing stages proved decisive; the visitors needed 99 from the final ten overs and could not bridge the gap.
Left-arm seamer Olly Hannon-Dalby was the pick of the Warwickshire attack, finishing with excellent figures of 5 for 60, which swung the contest in the home side's favour.

The Bears set the tone after being sent in, racing past 86 for one inside 16 overs as Barnard and his partners rotated strike and punished loose deliveries. Barnard reached his half-century briskly and went on to convert it into a sixth List A century for the county.
Surrey showed resilience in their reply but were hampered by a combination of tight fielding and disciplined bowling. A direct hit and some sharp ground fielding produced key dismissals in the middle order, while the required run-rate climbed too quickly for the chase to remain realistic in the final overs.
The result will be encouraging for Warwickshire as they look to build momentum in Group B of the competition, while Surrey will take positives from solid contributions at the top of the order but must find a way to sustain partnerships through the middle and death overs.
