Family tribute and appeal

His cousin, Jennifer Smith, described a relaxed and generous young man who was close to his family and friends. She recalled spending holidays together and spoke of the shock among relatives as they come to terms with the loss. Ms Smith also set up a crowdfunding page to help cover funeral expenses and provide support to the family at a difficult time.

"I think he just wanted to wade in the shallow part of the water... There's like a drop off, I guess, and he didn't realize it and got in the deep part. He didn't know how to swim. He just panicked is what I was told."

She added that a friend tried to help and attempted resuscitation, and that the situation has been devastating for Mr Wethington’s mother, who previously lost a daughter. Mr Wethington leaves behind a five-year-old son, named Tyler.

Next steps

The body of Mr Wethington has been taken to Frankfort for an autopsy, according to the family. No further official details were provided at this stage.
