Sussex Police are investigating an allegation of antisemitic abuse in Worthing town centre after officers responded to a disturbance on Warwick Street in the morning of 6 June.

Incident and arrest

Officers attended the area between 10:15am and 10:45am following reports of a disturbance in which it was claimed that a man shouted antisemitic abuse and threats. A man was subsequently arrested on several suspicions, including failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice (CPN), causing racially or religiously aggravated harassment, alarm or distress, and obstructing or resisting a constable in the execution of their duty.

The suspect has been released on bail pending further enquiries. Police say they are continuing to investigate and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

“Can you help our investigation into a report of a disturbance and possible hate crime?”

Sussex Police have asked any witnesses or victims who have not already given information to contact them. Reports can be submitted through the force’s online channels or by calling 101. When calling, members of the public are asked to quote reference 600 of 06/07.

Context and next steps

Allegations described by police are being treated as a possible hate crime. Investigations of this kind aim to establish the facts of what occurred, whether criminal offences were committed, and whether any aggravating factors linked to race or religion apply. The individual arrested remains under investigation; being bailed is not a finding of guilt.

Police inquiries will include identifying and speaking to witnesses, seeking any available CCTV footage from the area, and taking further statements. The force has invited anyone who believes they were affected by the incident to contact them even if they have not yet done so.
